You may have already completed a criminal record check in the past. However, these checks are only valid at the time they are issued. New offences could occur after that date, which is why employers often require a new certificate to ensure the information is current.

Important: A previously issued certificate does not reflect your current status. A new check ensures accuracy and compliance with employer policy.

DBS Update Service

If you're registered with the DBS Update Service, your prospective employer may be able to access your existing certificate online. In this case, you might not need a new check.

What you need to do

  1. Check whether you're enrolled in the DBS Update Service.
  2. If yes — provide your employer with permission to check your certificate.
  3. If not — be prepared to complete a new criminal record check as part of your screening process.
