• Why do employers check criminal history?

Modified on Mon, 5 Aug at 4:28 PM

The main reason employers do a criminal history check is to establish whether they hire a trustworthy and honest individual or whether the candidate is a potential threat to the business.

Criminal background screening helps businesses mitigate risks, protect their assets, avoid additional costs, and ensure a safe environment at workplace.

This is not to say that those with a criminal history cannot be employed or are untrustworthy upon rehabilitation or reparation.

Any employment offer is up to the prospective employer and not Verifile, we simply report the facts as presented to us.

It’s crucial that any criminal record checks carried out by employers are proportionate and relevant to the role in question and comply with the Police Act 1997 and the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974.
