What is a DBS online account?

A DBS online account is a personal account created by candidates to have a DBS check undertaken, see the results of a check, or get a DBS certificate.

To create an individual DBS online account, please follow this link:

or visit,

The purpose of a DBS Portal Account

The candidate can consent their employer to access an electronic certificate.

You must create a DBS Individual Account so you can access electronic certificates when candidates give you consent to access them.

You must fully activate your account and then supply Verifile with the email address used in the registration process. Only on receipt of this email address will Verifile be able to set up the service, so certificates are available for you to access.

How to create a DBS Individual Account

• Please visit the following webpage:

https://barring.homeoffice.gov.uk/HomeOfficeExternalPortal/ and then select the ‘’ link.

• Select ‘Create an individual account’.

You should complete all mandatory fields; these are indicated by a red asterisk.

• Usernames cannot contain #.

• Usernames can be an email address.

• Although Telephone Number is not a mandatory field, it's useful to add a mobile number as this will be used when being asked for a onetime passcode instead of the email address, which will prove a speedier process.

• Please avoid entering a landline number.

• You'll be required to enter the CAPTCHA and click ‘Submit’.

A confirmation screen is displayed. Once you have completed the online form, you will receive an email with an activation code and a link to enter the code. You will need to log in your emails to activate the account.

The activation link in your email will direct you to the ‘Activate my Account’ section of the DBS activation page.

The provided activation code is only valid for 24 hours. If you do not use the activation code within 24 hours, you'll need to register again.

• You should enter your Username and Activation Code and click ‘Submit’.

You are presented with a Create DBS online account log in details page.

• You must create a Password, Memorable Word, and answers 3 security questions. These details should be kept secret and should not be shared with individuals that should not access criminal record results.

• An account Activation Confirmation Page is shown—Click ‘Return to login’.

• To use the DBS Services, the user will need to log in using the link ‘To use the DBS Services you will need to log in’.

• You must enter your Username, Password and CAPTCHA—Then click ‘Log in’.

If a user enters incorrect details 3 times, it will lock them out of their account for 24 hours.

Note: The Services links on the left-hand side of the page can be accessed without registering a portal account or logging in.

Important

You must now give Verifile the email address used in the registration process. Verifile will confirm when the service is set up for you to access certificates.

You'll only be able to access certificates when the candidate has given you consent to do so.

If convictions are found, then any consent to access an electronic certificate will be revoked, needing the candidate to confirm again that they still wish to give consent.
