When you apply for a DBS check, your application moves through several set stages before a certificate is issued.
Knowing what happens at each stage can help explain where your application is and why delays sometimes occur.
Stage 1
This is when your DBS application is received and validated. At this point, the details you’ve submitted are checked to make sure everything is complete and accurate.
Stage 2
This stage involves a search of the Police National Computer (PNC). This is where the DBS checks national police records as part of the background screening process.
Stage 3
Stage 3 only applies to certain Enhanced DBS checks. At this stage, the application is checked against the Children’s and/or Adults’ Barred Lists, where required for the role.
Stage 4
This is when your DBS application is sent to your local police force. The police then cross-reference your application against their local criminal records to identify any relevant information that may need to be disclosed on the certificate and hasn’t already been picked up.
This is also the stage where most DBS delays occur. Some police forces experience backlogs because of factors such as limited staffing or internal constraints. In these cases, applications may not be reviewed immediately and can sometimes remain at this stage for several days or, in some cases, weeks. (Verifile cannot speed up this process).
Stage 5
The final stage, where the DBS certificate is produced and printed before being sent out to the applicant.
If your DBS check has been at Stage 4 for more than 60 days, you can escalate this directly with the DBS service, as they are responsible for the processing of the application. If it has been less than 60 days, you can contact your local police station directly for further information.
While waiting can be frustrating, delays at Stage 4 are relatively common and rarely mean there is an issue with your application.
