• How to request an Employment History Statement in the U.K.

Modified on Fri, 9 Aug at 12:02 PM

An employment history statement will confirm which employers you were employed by, and whether you received Jobseeker’s Allowance during a specific tax year.

Scenarios for use.

  1. You have struggled to find documentation that proves employment
  2. You cannot remember your periods of employment (dates, etc.)
  3. This may be useful to prove periods of self-employment

To request an employment history statement, you need to know:

  • your date of birth
  • your National Insurance Number (NINO)
  • your address
  • what tax year you need to request an employment history statement for
  • What employers you worked for during this tax year

You should call HMRC (His Majesty's Revenue & Customs) on +44 (0) 300 200 3300 with your NINO (National Insurance Number).

When connected to an advisor, you need to request an employment history statement for the tax year in question.

If they ask why you need a statement, explain that your new employer requires confirmation of your employment during this tax year.

HM Revenue & Customs will post the employment history statement to you, normally within 14 working days.
